Draconis Squamae: Cybersecurity Behind a Veil of Secrecy and Intrigue at UCF

ORLANDO, FL – Perhaps less known of UCF’s wide array of clubs, honor societies, and fraternities, is one that stands as a mishmash of these identities.
A HUB of Digital Mindfullness
In a way that contrasts UCF’s other clubs that focus on programming, web design, and the like, Draconic Squamae seems to have a focus on the realities of digital culture, positive and negative. It was in their early meetings that I partook in that, often to odd degrees, the club placed an emphasis on the important of anonymity in the online world.
While some may consider these lessons those of an archaic age that most people now grow into naturally, it is made clear with even the smallest amount of time spent among the club’s more veteran members that they aren’t misrepresenting the knowledge they claim to have.
Skill Sharing and Mutual Knowledge
As insular as the club may appear from outside, once inside, the community appears to place an emphasis on strengthening those who carry the Draconic Squamae name with them. With either workshops, skill-shares, or open discussion about different techniques, practices, etc., an air of open cooperation and knowledge-sharing is ever-present, and encouraged at every step.
More than Meets the Eye
Draconic Squamae can’t properly be talked about, however, without mention of their practices that, admittedly, may be considered ‘odd.’
Whether it is an insistence to meet in locations that do not normally facilitate UCF club activities and meetings, a communication style that verges on ‘paranoid,’ or a certain insular nature that carries with it more the air of a secret society than a student organization, Draconic Squamae certainly is unique in this regard.
Perhaps this comes with the territory of only being a chapter of a larger organization and identity, but without question, it is one that arouses one’s sense of adventure and curiosity.
Looking Ahead
A more recently-established chapter, it remains to be seen how Draconis Squamae and their community continues to develop within UCF and beyond, but I think I speak for all familiar with this name in saying that it is a development worth watching with ample attention.
